Whiplash
When we think of whiplash, we usually think of its worst cause: an automobile accident. But according to a division of the U.S. government’s National Institute of Health (its National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke), we can receive this kind of neck injury any time we experience a sudden extension and flexion of the neck, which can damage soft-tissues, intervertebral joints, discs, ligaments, cervical muscles, and nerve roots.1
Whiplash Symptoms
In a whiplash-type injury, we’ll usually experience some- neck pain
- stiffness
- headaches
- dizziness
- abnormal prickling or burning sensations on our skin (paresthesia)
- shoulder and back pain
- memory loss
- difficulty concentrating
- sleeplessness
- fatigue
- depression
What can be confounding is that whiplash symptoms may not appear immediately after this kind of injury, but instead may surface several days later.
